Is there actually a speed difference between OS's?

Hey everyone, im not bad with computers, but havent done much in terms of OS and such before. But now that i have all the parts for my new PC im building, its got me wondering what OS to run. I've never had anything too fast or modern in terms of whats out there, so i havent run anything newer than XP. I heard Vista was crap lol. And i also breifly googled the topic and came up with XP being a teeny bit faster at startup and whatnot then the others out there now.

My question is... Is there any significant difference between XP and Win7? Win7 is new and looks cool, not to mention its supposedly got a bunch of cool new things lol... And XP is, well, old :P... But if there is anything significant enough to matter i would rather run XP.

Also, if you want to share your thoughts on Win7 as far as how it performs, looks, whatever lol That would be cool too.

Thanks

I'm still running XP and haven't had a single thing I've wanted to do that I was unable to.

I've never really noticed a speed difference between my machine and other people's systems that have win7.

When it comes to every day usage, launching browser windows or opening applications, stuff like that, your RAM and hard drive speed are going to have more to do with it than your OS does (Unless you're running win2k)

Waaay back in the day I had an old Athlon64 system when onboard memory controllers had just came out and I had a pair of 10,000rpm raptor drives in a RAID0. Running XP, it was still quicker at light duty work than most systems I've used even by today's standards.

I don't consider upgrading to win7 something we need to do just yet. :icon_thumby:

Also, if anyone cares... lol ill post what parts i got for this computer. Should be a decent one :D

-AMD Phenom dual core processor (Supposed to be able to unlockable easily to a quad core if you are lucky. About 90% chance of unlocking cores acording to people online and around)
-GTX 460 1GB video card
-1.5TB HDD
-8GB DDR3 RAM
-M68MT-S2P motherboard
-500W power supply
-5.1 sound card (mainly just to top out the price i had to spend and to say i have it lol :P)

And its all going in a cheaper case that was about 60 bucks or so, got good reveiws, and sold itself with the picture of it with LEDs lmao. Case wasnt too important to me as long as it got good reviews and looked sleek and black :P

Its not top of the line, but it should do me good. Total price was about 675 with free shipping. I went thru NCIX.com (great site), and it was shipped fast to me in just under a week. Which is awesome because where i live i dont get anything for at least a month lmao :P

Lol its mainly for looks. I just wanted to know if theres anything actually there for a difference. XP has been good and im familair with it, just the thought crosses my mind frequently that win7 would be cool lol :P

Should be a fun one, post pics when you're done.

I'm anxious to see the case too. You may want to invest in a nice one down the road, the case is one of the few things on computers that won't get out dated for a loooong time.

yeah hardware have more to do with it then software. As for Vista it is slow but not as bad as ranted about. Win7 is by far the best in my opinion its extremely fast on restart and what not.
If your using windows explorer ditch that and get Firefox or Google Chrome

Ya i just wanted something that would perform great now, and wouldnt get too outdated in the future. Im not a real big gamer, but this is definately going to get me to go buy a few lol :P

Ill take pics for sure when im done. What pics tho? Lol Truck stuff are pretty straight-forward, but for computers just a pic of outside and inside? lol :P

Lol i have chrome and ff and was using ie more because im just familiar with it. But i probably will get used to ff or something because of the whole theory behind people making viruses and such to work thru the more common browser (or so i hear lol)

outside and inside? lol :P

Pretty much.

Depending on how complex your build is, there can be lots and lots of other tid bits too.

I've seen guys put more effort into building their computer than a lot of guys put into building their trucks.

Did you get your machine with a window? Are you doing wire hiding? Custom lighting? Added cooling? Blah blah blah the list can go on forever. :icon_thumby:

Edit: I also noticed you didn't have any brands listed, mind filling that in?

Nothing too custom. Lol the case i think has LEDs (either that or they use false advertisements to grab men's attension :P). Idk how the cooling and such would be set up and i didnt have the cash to find out, so nothing other than what the case comes with there. No window unfortunately, but the guy that helped me build it origonally said i didnt have too much to show off anyways lol :P

As for brands... ummm...

-AMD Phenom dual core processor
-ZOTAC GTX 460 1GB video card
-Western Digital 1.5TB HDD
-Mushkin 8GB DDR3 RAM
-GIGABYTE M68MT-S2P motherboard
-CORSAIR 500W power supply
-ASUS 5.1 sound card
-LG DVD-RW drive

I am pretty sure those are the brands. Its what they say on the packaging, but i havent heard of half of them lol. The case says on the box "IKONIK by IOGISYS" lol

Mushkin: Good
Corsair: Good
Gigabyte: Good
AMD: Good
Western Digital: Good
Asus: Good
LG: Good enough for an optical drive
Zotac: Best of luck with this one, they are NOT one of the more reputable brands.

I run Linux, and suggest the latest Ubuntu. I also suggest that you do not run XP. Microsoft is basically dropping support. They've officially dropped XP SP2 and 2000, and SP3 isn't far behind. I have an XP SP3 machine, but it's sole purpose in life is to run my train simulator and play older games that I like and it does NOT get connected to my network. If you're certain you want Windows, get the latest version of 7. It's going to have the best security, and be supported the longest. Vista is junk anyways.

So i got bored and desided to try and figure it out myself lol. After a few hours of anoyances i got everything in the case... I was pretty happy with myself... But then i looked once more at what else needs to be done and, well, i quit for now lol. I still need to do all the wiring. So that will have to wait until i find someone that knows what they're doing.

As for Linux, i think im going to stay away from that since i dont have any experience with it. I have learned a bit about what it is and compared it to Windows in class.. But I dont even know anyone that runs Linux so i'd be on my own for figuring it out. I think what i will be doing is run XP and eventually get windows 7.

A simple rat's nest wiring job isn't that complicated, I'd be happy to help. You can migrate into the more advanced hidden wiring down the road. What are you having trouble with?

If your sticking with XP (I'm assuming 32 bit here x64 XP never really caught on) your going to have less than 3GB of you RAM usable, with 8GB of RAM and 1GB of VRAM you need a 64bit OS or it's just wasted. It may suck learning a new OS but there is really no reason for a home PC to buy all new hardware and run an outdated barely supported OS. Also since you bought a 460 I'd assume some gaming is planned (if not that card is way overkill) so note XP will leave you with no higher than DX9 while 7 will give you DX10 and 11.

And Vista isn't nearly as bad as most people seem to make it out to be (yeah it sucked at launch) but there is no reason to buy it now that 7 is out.
