My credo
If it ain't broke, I can't fix it.
I was looking to buy an 8.8 TL for my 99 Ranger that I swapped a 5.0 Explorer motor into. I thought I found one locally here in the Phoenix area, but when I went to pull it, I noticed that the tag was "3 55", not "3L55", "3LS55", "3SL55" like a Mustang 8.8 tag always notes if it's a limited slip. The donor Ranger is a 2001 2WD 4.0L and my understanding was that all later Rangers with 4.0L were 8.8 TLs.

Is this rear an open diff or did Ford stop putting the "L", "LS", or "SL" combo on the tag in 2001?

By the way, the cab is gone, so there's no way for me to verify it by axle code...

Any help is appreciated.

No L = open diff.

just take the cover off, trust me on this one, always look inside before you shell out your hard earned dollers.... (ask me how i know) haha
