The tach on my 2003 Ranger 2.3 works occasionally. Seems to work when the lights are on more often than when it doesn't. May work for several hours, and then goes completely dead for several days. Trying to figure out the least expensive way to fix it. On previous threads there is discussion about complete cluster replacement. Is this a difficult job? Or, is there another way I could diagnose this myself?

intermittent problems are usually caused by bad wires. Check the wires while someone else wiggles them.
Changing the cluster is not difficult, just takes time.
