lost reverse in 2001 3.0L

A little over a month ago, I heard an alarmingly loud clunk when shifting into reverse. Since then, it would work fine most of the time, but then randomly do nothing when shifting into reverse but would work again after shifting into drive and then back again. I had my mech. flush and filter the system when it went in for other stuff last week. Yesterday it stopped going into reverse completely although the forward gears work fine.
Does this sound familiar? I am searching for info also. I really can't afford a tranny swap right now.

some time the solenoid takes a crap and what it does is that it does not allow the solenoid to seal and cause it to work and then not work!!

why is there no info on this reverse issue. im having the exact same problem. the owner i bought it from said he heard a loud noise and then it would never go into reverse again. now if i shift it into reverse i get nothing but all the forward gears feel fine.

Reverse band probably broke ( bang ). Put trans in MAN1 and see if it has engine braking. It should but betcha it doesn't.

you were right i did not feel any engine braking in 1st. it also hesitated a bit when i hit the gas. does this means it needs a whole new trans?

Time for a overhaul.

it sucks that i cant just pop the trans from the explorer in the ranger. i was planning to sell the explorer whole anyways i guess
