Hey,
My 91 ranger 2.3 rwd with 128k on it occasionally has a terrible rattle under load, usually when the engine has been warm for a while.

It sounds really bad, its like a giant spray paint can is being shook aggressivly under my hood. Its definately load sensitive, usually worst at around 3/4 throttle, lessening a little if i floor it and disappearing entirely if i drop the gas.

Its a sharp noise, but I don't think its even enough for it to be mechanical.

The thing starts and runs fine, idles smooth, and has plenty of power (well not plenty, but all you'd expect from 70 stock horses of fury). It has a straight pipe on it, and some random cat (i didnt do it! it came that way). The 02 is in place in the exhaust manifold though.

Ive checked the EGR, and the truck stumbles when i put apply a vaccum to its little port, fuel pressure is 35 psi and fairly steady, even when i blip the throttle.

As for DTC's, i get a 41 code (hego not switching/lean for 15 seconds or more) on the KOEO test, and an intermittent CEL. The original owner seemed to think it was due to the exhaust system.

Motor was supposedly rebuild with new rings and bearings within 10k miles. Although it has started squirting a little oil out of the dipstick and valve cover breather, suggesting some pretty serious blowby. Id be willing to swap pistons and or rings, but want to get this ping sorted first.

IM STUMPED! What could possibly cause a ping to come and go??

I found a service bulleting for 90-91 ranger 2.3l exhibiting a code 41 and nothing else on the koeo test. It says to replace the ECM.

Oh and i just remembered, i have cleaned the maf.

I did a comp test when i noticed oil in the intake manifold and coming out of the dipstick, and it was 155-175 psi, which i thought was real good.
