Intermittent 4x4

This is the best way to describe it. Its a 2006 Ford Ranger 4x4. What I've got going on is when I go to engage my 4x4, it'll do all of its clicks and what not, sounding like it engages, but when it's done, no light illuminates. Other times, like just earlier, I turned it to 4hi, it did its clicking, and then ended up in 4lo, which was working, because I couldn't turn worth a damn. I don't know if I have a bad motor (short?), or if its in the t-case itself. Any help/input is greatly appreciated

Yes, I would say shift motor issue.
It is a common issue, the brushes get stuck so motor doesn't work well or at all.
