Instrument Cluster Replacment

I'm currently looking in to buying a new instrument cluster from a member here, and it turns out that I would have to mess around and match the mileage because my stock one has higher miles than that one reads (it's from a newer truck). Is it illegal in any way to do this? Is it very hard?

i had the same question about this when i switched out clusters...it IS illegal if you plan to re-sell the truck etc etc...all i did however, was take a screwdriver and turn it forward/back to desired number..just make sure its all properly aligned so you don't have to mess with it again.

There are 7 torx-bit screws holding the plastic bezel/clear cluster face; remove those to get at the gauge faces/odometer

Does a 99 have a mechanical or electronic odometer?

i don't think the ranger had electronic odometer till 2004

When I replaced the cluster on my 93, the replacement had different color highlights than the original. To preserve my odometer reading I swapped the mechanical guts from the old speedo to the new faceplate. That worked just fine.
