Oh, I'm sorry I thought we were talking about K&N air filters.

run a turbod motor through a dusty desert race with a paper filter... when your turbo is ruined will you swear off the paper filters too?Do you consider a "dusted turbo" a catastrophic failure? The engine will still run, but many owners have had to pay for the turbo replacement due to the warranty being void from using the K&N!!!
Also high Si in UOAs is an indication of dirt being ingested from the K&N will increase engine wear.
Bottom line, there is no performance advantage to the K&N, why would anybody want to risk the damage the K&N can cause (MAF sensors, IAC valves, and throttle bodies gummed up)?
Again, you won't find this statement from ANY manufacturer of OEM paper air filters:
"K&N will not be responsible for any other expenses incurred by the customer under the terms of this warranty, nor shall it be responsible for any damages either consequential, special, contingent, or otherwise; or expenses or injury arising directly or indirectly from the use of the K&N Air Filter."

let me re-phrase my question, have YOU ever seen a catastrophic failure first hand on any engine solely from the use of a K&N filter?

WRONG about what? I didn't make a statement i posed a question....WRONG!!! That's how K&N filters came out is for races like Baja! The OEM paper filters would plug up with dust in no time, the K&N's wouldn't. Same amount of dust flowing, guess where it was going?
