Installing K&N, Air box on or off?

If that were the case I would think car company's would just void there warranty for anyone who installed one into there vehicle.

Yes, it happens all the time!!! Why do you think K&N has this in their warranty statement on their website?

"K&N will not be responsible for any other expenses incurred by the customer under the terms of this warranty, nor shall it be responsible for any damages either consequential, special, contingent, or otherwise; or expenses or injury arising directly or indirectly from the use of the K&N Air Filter."

I have an aftermarket intake and regardless if it helps, stays the same, or hurts performance, it sounds and looks really cool. LOL. I would have to say it doesn't hurt my performance. I found mine on ebay for like $60, its a no name intake but for the sake of arguing whether an aftermarket flows more than the stock intake or gives you more power ( which everyone says the stock intake is more than efficient) it really doesn't matter does it. Just depends how you want to spent your money and how you want your engine compartment to look.

If your that proud of it, you should consider removing your hood, or get a clear hood made so you can see it all the time!!:D:D

Not any different than putting led lamps in your dash, they don't do anything different than stock, they just look better. :)

They put that in their warranty statement to cover their ass...thats common sense...they aren't stupid! K&N works...if they didn't, they would be out of business I assume.

Well, you assumed wrong!

Check this out, this company is still in business, and this thing is known to be a SCAM:

You are right about K&N not being stupid, they know the dirt that their filters pass, that's why they put that statement in their warranty!!

bob, have you ever seen a catastrophic failure as a direct result of using a K&N filter?

Do you consider a "dusted turbo" a catastrophic failure? The engine will still run, but many owners have had to pay for the turbo replacement due to the warranty being void from using the K&N!!!

Also high Si in UOAs is an indication of dirt being ingested from the K&N will increase engine wear.

Bottom line, there is no performance advantage to the K&N, why would anybody want to risk the damage the K&N can cause (MAF sensors, IAC valves, and throttle bodies gummed up)?

Again, you won't find this statement from ANY manufacturer of OEM paper air filters:

"K&N will not be responsible for any other expenses incurred by the customer under the terms of this warranty, nor shall it be responsible for any damages either consequential, special, contingent, or otherwise; or expenses or injury arising directly or indirectly from the use of the K&N Air Filter."

I will give you a free pass since you are an electrical engineer...from my exp. as an electrician, electrical engineers think way too much and end up screwing things up...if only they would use common sense.

The fact is, there are people who have had engine-related issues after installing k&n air filters on their vehicles, myself included. I've even posted about it 2 or 3 times now, whenever someone asks if they're good filters or not. They do pass oil and gum up the MAF, causing fuel economy and power to take a nosedive. They will cause the PCM to go into "limp-mode," which then cranks up the KR and pulls fueling waaayyy back.

That's what happened to me. My wife's car started getting less than 15 mpg and would shudder and buck while idling at stop lights. The check engine light came on and stayed on, and the car had no useable power to speak of. The k&n panel filter that was in the car had less than 10k on it. I changed it out for a FRAM tough guard air filter and cleaned the intake tract(including IAT and MAF sensors) thoroughly, started the car and immediately noticed that the idle had smoothed out and the check engine light was off. Haven't had any problems whatsoever since ditching the k&n.

A VW mechanic I know has experienced the same issues with late-model dubs using mass-air systems and k&n filters. He doesn't think too highly of them.
