Now, I'll start of by saying, if you do this your doing it on your own terms, and im not going to be reponsible for if you blow up something.

Also, i dont want to hear the crap about how they are "unreliable and a bad idea" This is my truck, and if you dont like them, dont put one in.

So far, i got my hands on a v6 Topaz fan with shroud. Im going tonight to buy the relays and all the compnents to put together the system to run it.

it will include:
~breaker for both high and low
~relay for both high and low
~relay for warning light, so if fan loses power, red LED turns on.
~high and low by-pass switch, with off switch for when wanted off. (will have military rocker cover so it cant be accidentaly turned off)
~adjustable temp sensor, for both high and low, as well as lead run to ac on wire to kick over the high relay so it cycles with AC pump. this will bypass the thermostat high setting when the AC is on.

ill be doing a full build with pictures, as it seems there isnt one.

My advantages are:

In the winter i can have it off to warm the truck up faster (clutch is always spinning)

I dont live in a warm climate, so i dont need extreme cooling.

i dont tow, ever.

i rarely have my ac on.

i only drive in the populated areas, so if it fails me, i can fix it easily, plus i have ford ESP with free towing. :)

i can reduce the load on my waterpump, to help the bearings last longer.

give me more room in the engine bay, for "toys"

give me an awesome reason to put a 200 amp alternator, so i can run other fun stuff, and then add my dual battery setup, with isolator and my winch.

i will also be swithcing my driving lights to my second battery, as well as my amp and power converter.

give me the ability to control the temp my truck is running at, and kick it on high when im stuck in traffic.

Now, i know the results if not done properly. i will be spending about $100 on just electrical, and if any of you know me, you know its gotta be perfect.

pics will be up this weekend if my plans dont change.

and to anybody wanting to tell me how stuipd i am, and what a bad idea this is....:thefinger:

Are you sure that the fan doesn't already have 2 circuit breakers near the motor, one for high and one for low? The Taurus fan on my trail truck has it. I also run a Focus fan in the front to cool down the transmission fluid when out in the woods.

i was wondering what fan i could put on the tranny cooler!

its got a in line breaker, but i dont think a relay. ive only tested it by tuching the neg and pos for both high and low. both settings work. just need a relay to turn them on seperate.

found this:

will be doing some modifications to it, to fit my needs. but otherwise thats a basic.

my only question, is where do i find a adjustable thermostat that will run a low and high setting, and will run high when the ac is on.

Make it run all the time when the AC is on. Most of the cars now a days do that. I don't thik it will hurt a bit.

EDIT*

I just run 2 switches for high and low actually 3 on/off and high/low....but if all you need is one switch for low and then you can run the AC for high.

better yet, i managed to put together a system that will run itself. the high low temp sensor will handle it for me.

now, do they sell thermostats that have a high and a low speed? as well as an adjustable temp setting?

well i revised it, and have dropped it down to a 2 relay system, where normaly the fan will be off.

if the temp gets too high, the high speed comes on.

when off:

if you turn on the AC the low comes on, unless temp gets too high, then the high will come on till temp drops, then back to the low. the low can cycle with the ac pump, and can cycle with high and low if ac is on.

this will keep the truck cool, and keep a fan on during the AC.

ill probably add a system with a single relay, to run an aux fan on my tranny cooler. i may even add a second fan, depending on how the one does.

2 speed fan sounds like a big pain in the ass. The Jeep Grand Cherokee fan is pretty reasonable, it uses a Bosch motor, it's 19" across, 3" thick and uses S-blades making it pretty quiet. It also has a pretty reasonable ~25 amp draw. It moves a lot of air, it'll suck in a bed sheet from 18" in front of the grill with no shroud. Mopar Part number CBG4F250.

its a great idea when set up correctly.

it how you improve low speed ac cooling.

i use fox 4cyl mustang stuff for simplicity, theres good t switches that are hi/low from many oem applications...the mustang switch located in the neck and if you want high low the same switch tee'd in down stream can work....generally i ground side the relays through 3 way switching.

if you got the coin http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SPAL-PWM-V3-Programmable-Electric-Fan-Controller-/170683534933?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27bd880e55#ht_1247wt_939

spal has nice stuff that can really make things easy.

A single speed fan can (and should) be setup to run when the AC is on, not sure how a 2 speed is better at this. Seems like a lot more work than it's worth when there are good single speed alternatives that don't suck as much juice and aren't as loud.

Also that controller won't support a Taurus fan..

Ok she is in and doing awesome. Not a problem with temp! Ran it like above. With low on AC and bypassable to high based on heat.

So, heres the pics!

as you can see, very little room before:

First thing to do is pull the intake:

Next, pull the fan and unbolt the shroud.

i didnt have the tool to remove the bolt, so i took a big hammer and a chissle and hit the edge of the bolt, and it spun off my hand.

Tons of space now!

Had to make my own mounts, made out of stainless. probably 14 guage.

Next you have to run the relays and wires acording to what you came up with.

and all wired and ready to run!

oh well, im running the HP tune :icon_hornsup:

any Q's let me know!

not a fan of these.

split the power for each speed through two of these or one big 70 amp
