ill be getting a long block with in the next week or two, so i was out in the garage tonight looking at the motor that ive pulled. is there something thats going to need to be done about timing the motor before putting in back in the truck? i noticed the TDC markings on the main crank pully and began to wonder what exactly is in store for putting together a long block- besides the obvious swapping pans, covers, ect.

id like to know if there are very specific items that need to be tended to, or do you just slap some gaskets, covers and pans on and toss the motor back under the hood?

Normally they are all timed and ready to go. Just swap your valve covers and a few other bolt ons and your good to go.

The pickup coil on a 4.0 is on the front cover and reads the reluctor on the backside of the crank pulley

The pickup coil mounts on doel pins and is not adjustable.

Basically it's a pooch that can't be screwed.

thats funny

the more i thought about it, the more i figured they would have had to time the cam during the assembly. couple guys at work mentioned the electronic ignition was done with that pick-up and that the pulley would be keyed somehow, so there wasnt anything that could get messed up.

will there be seals that need to be set, like the rear and front crank seals? can those be put in carefully without a seal driver?

and whats the plate that sits between the block and tranny? is looks like a big azz aluminum gasket. i bent mine at the starter opening, so is that something important? reusable?

the big aluminum plate is a dust shield that keeps dirt and junk from collecting in the bellhousing.

the engine should be assembled with the rear crank seal already, the front seal on the timing cover might be an issue, because the timing cover itself isn't mounted on Dowel pins.

Ford has a special tool to center the cover on the crank.

i guess ill get a better idea once i have the seal in hand, but cant you start the seal into the cover, then set that onto the shaft, then tap it all home together, then screw the bolts in...? ill look through the chiltons manual i have to see if thats got anything worth a damn for pics and assembly procedure.

another thing im wondering, how do you know what gaskets require additional RTV? do they all? or just the timing cover and pan?
