for whatever it's worth, this is what a 2005 manual says.
there is a small difference between measured and actual shims in the chart.

I thought he was referencing that AllanD has suggested rebuilders err on the tight side of spec and even beyond (0-.002), vs. spec (.002-.006.)

I feel like I remember reading that same discussion, but I wouldn't necessarily agree with the advice. Not only did I try it and have bad results, I thought someone else had argued spec play is taken up by parts expanding more than the case as the trans heats up.

That’s what I was getting at. Setting it up on the loose side would accommodate parts expansion.
