Info needed for 88 ranger xlt

I have just bought a 1988 Ranger XLT Super Cab 2 wd, and I have some questions.
1. How can I tell what auto trans is in it?
2. Did the Ranger come w/true bucket seats w/lumbar support in BOTH seats(operational)?
3. How many came w/dual gas tanks and what are capacities?

I would appreciate any kind of help w/these questions. It`s a pretty decent truck...2.9 auto., air cond., cruise...I`ll post some pics when the sun comes out! Oh yeah...all 4 Ranger wheels, center caps, and trim rings are still on it!

Howdy and welcome Big Mo...

There are people on here who know the answer to number one so I will let them answer...the 88 super cab came with buckets and lumbar support in the driver side seat...passenger not sure about...I have an 88 super cab with driver side lumbar support...never used it but it is there...and so are the controls on the side of the seat.

Passenger side has something too but I never bothered to check what it was or even try to connect either one up.Mainly because I yanked the original 2.9 and the wiring and put in the awesome 2.3 4 banger...and it was carbed so different wiring inside and out...also yanked out the ac and tilt steering which were options also...

They either had true buckets or the 60/40 bench...although I think that came in later years...and probably could be ordered once in production on any extended cab (super cab same thing different name).

Dual tanks were an option...and no one but Ford could tell you the special orders that were placed...I haven't seen many with dual tanks but most that I have seen were 4x4.

An 88 will have an A4LD if it is auto. That's the only one Ford was using in the Ranger that year. The trans can be positively identified by the shape of the pan, look at the tech article about auto trans ID for details.

Some Rangers and Bronco IIs did come with bucket seats with the adjustable lumbar supports. It was a factory option. I don't know production numbers on that option, but I have not seen many of them. Only a handful in junk yards.

I also don't know the actual production numbers on the dual tanks, but I saw somewhere that it was between about 5-10% of total production that year. It's also an option that seems to be more common to find in certain areas of the country.

The front tank on the truck you described should hold about 14.5 gallons, while the rear tanks were all about 13 IIRC.
