My credo
Crossed threads are tight threads.
Title says it all. I don't think it is any louder, but is taking longer to go away. Also it goes away and comes back, then goes away for good once warm. Should I be worried or carry on and live with the tick.

I let it warm up good before driving, and wait for tick to go away even if just doing a parking shuffle.

I got about 97k orig miles on the odo.

It had 87k miles when I bought it around 2014. Previous owner was elder Japanese lady that wanted to learn to drive stick and gave up lol.
It sits during summer because AC doesn't work and it's an old not well insulated...besides that I do drive it pretty often , but not daily or very far.

Do you mean marvel mystery oil or seafoam? What is the consumer name of Rislone? I will try it.

any of the snake oils you need to swill em a minute at your own risk and immediately flush the engine with just oil.

then buy a quality filter and oil.

i suggest...

51515 and valvoline restore and protect..

Replace the hydraulic tensioners. That will a lot of times make that tick go away.

I actually have had this stuff work. It's just a very high detergent oil that slowly breaks down varnish that can make the lifters sticky and tick. You do have to give it time to work though.

I've dumped a quart of diesel fuel in the oil and let it idle for a while... then change the oil right away. I had one Explorer that would sit and tick all day long and that little trick made a substantial difference. It would still tick a little bit on a cold startup but that was all.

Dunno if I'd do that often or on a vehicle that I needed to trust long term... I figured it was the same concept as putting Sea Foam in the oil, just in larger quantity.

Appreciate the replies guys.

I will probably try the rislone or maybe the valve line stuff depending what my local oreillys has. The staff there is cool, it's well stocked, and the surrounding atuozones suck. I have Napa and stuff. But not very local.

Someone mention quality oil filter. This is my baby and I run good stuff anyways. No orange can of death here. I mostly stuck with motorcraft otherwise the next best compromise. I'm one of those guys that would rather pay more for tires that don't last as long but perform well. I don't get cheap tires that are terrible and last forever...delaying replacing them with good tires. I've tossed hardly worn cheap 70k rated tires because they sucked so bad.

the purolator boss or pure one, and 51515 are great filters. the motorcraft is not always great. there are only a couple places that make filters, and i have got some sketchy motorcrafts since 17. valvoline oil change shops are always swapping out suppliers as well. on my shop trucks that i like, i bring a purolator for it. and make damn sure they have the right spec oil before i let them pull the plug.

i dont have any issue using the motorcraft if it looks right and supertech full synthetic 10/30 in my 4.0. where i live they were the good 8 hole units. i need to make a picture set of them pulled apart.

risoline can work too good. pretty sure i tore up some valve seals from using that before.

Good info thanks!

For the record the tick is only on cold startup. Pretty much goes away once the temp gauge needle starts moving, and doesn't come back until the next cold start....but is taking longer to go away than it used to.

well, run the valvoline protect and restore...though i dont know if its available in 10/30.

i run the high mile supertech in the 4.0. but it will tick sooner or later.

rockers and pushrods from there....provided the valve seats are not stomped out.
