How do know or how do you know if the inertia switch is bad

I have had a mechanic put a new fuel pump but still seems to not getting fire

Unplug the inertia switch and check continuity between the pins, if it's open push the reset. Might be worth checking the fuel pump relay,too.

Thanks but tried everything so I took it off the firewall unplugged it and when the button is reset you can shake it and sounds like its full of small gravel

You can just run a jumper wire between the two terminals of the plug and see if the pump runs

Not recommended, but I deleted my switch. I at least need to install a manual switch.

I’ve used a jumper to test to see if the inertia switch is bad, jump the terminals on the harness to it. If it’s bad, replace it. Basically it has a ball bearing that the push button at the top is supposed to hold down against contacts and if you end up in an accident it’s supposed to pop up to cut fuel pressure to help prevent fire. Another common problem is the plug that connects to the fuel pump gets corroded. An 89, this would be on top of the tank. Also check the fuel pump relay under the hood, and of course fuses. I have popped a fuse before replacing parts. Shouldn’t happen, but it does.

I can confirm the inertia switch (if not bad) does what it's supposed to. Had a minor bump last year that tripped the switch. Had to reset it to be able to start again.
X2 in jumping the switch to rule it out as cause for no-start.
