My inertia switch connector melted and I heard you can just bypass the inertia switch and strip and connect the two wires together, is this safe?

Until you get into an accident and your fuel pump is still running. Just go to the junk yard a pull one out. I had the same problem you have, and thats what I did.

Only problem with JY parts like that are that they could be ready to go...so either get a couple of them (they're cheap, eh~) or buy a new one...that way it will probably last you a long time...

Thanks, I tried going to the autostore for a new one but its out of date, ford doesn't even sell it. JY it is.

They sell it, but its a Ford specific part. You have to go through Ford to get one. When I was looking for mine, I think they were like $90. I didn't want to spend that so I went to the JY and got one for $5.

i have been having similar problems with my 88 2.9, it will run and drive just fine but eventually it will die as if it ran out of gas. after searching around we found hot water on the inertia switch most likely coming from the heater core, so far i've spliced the two wires togeather but haven't had a chance to test it. as for the switch when i get a JY one does it matter if it is a Ford 2.9 or can it be any ford switch?

No, you can get any inertia fuel shutoff switch from any FoMoCo vehicle from the late 80's until the most recent one...they might mount a little different or be a little different size/shape or something like that, but they are the exact same thing internally and operate on the same principal...

Hell, you want the one out of my 93 parts ranger? I'm running it in the demo derbies this comming summer after I pull all the parts I need for my 96 from it...so i dont need the IFS switch anyways... just cover postage... PM me if youre interested.
