My credo
Sometimes you eat the bear, sometimes the bear eats you.
I'm looking to purchase an octane booster for my 4.0L OHV. Preferably I'm looking at Lucas Octane Boost or Purple Power. In your experience can you sincerely say that octane boosters work for the benefit of better gas mileage and engine performance etc. The users of Octane boosters, please respond....

^^^ what he said.

Running higher octane than necessary will speed up carbon production inside your motor and make less power.

i used to have to use a lead additive. i have tried octane boosters but they didn't do anything in my poor old cars

They do in fact boot the octane by a bit.

Unless you need a higher octane then they will not do anything for you.

The only person that I know of that uses an octane booster additive runs 93 and still needs a higher octane, so instead of running race gas or AV gas he just pours in a bottle at ever fill up.

The majority is in, seems it doesn't do any justice. I have a 93 Ranger with a 4.0L. I guess putting in a higher octane doesn't do anything for mileage, performance etc? It's all good, im glad I posted this thread. I was about to grab a bottle of octane boost today.

You won't even get any improvement out of higher octane pump fuel on any of the stock Ranger engines.

As stubborn as I am, and just For kicks and giggles,,, I still may throw a bottle in and see for mice elf. Would it harm the engine?

This looks interesting, a very well done test on a Dyno in my opinion.

The only thing it will do is raise the octane. Putting 89 instead of 87 in the tank will have the same effect.

the sohc4.0 is a higher compression ratio engine with a knock sensor to get it to run on 87. In this case running 89 is a good thing.

At any rate, if there is a difference you will need to run a couple tank through the system to get the full effect because the computer need time to adjust its parameters.
