I think my Mr Gasket frame mounted pump is getting weak. My fuel gauge also reads wonky.

Stupid thought crossed my mind. The in tank pump from like a ‘86 is supposed to work for a carb and going to that style would also get me a new fuel sender. Cost is about the same too.

What kinda pressure do they run? As simple as it sounds?

Ford changed the fuel level sender in 1989, so earlier won't work for 1989 and up Rangers

Mine is a ‘85.

Then you should be OK

Not sure of in tank pump pressure but on my 1987 I took the high pressure frame rail pump out and have been running the in tank (low pressure pump) for ten years.

Yes, if you are running a carb that would be fine

I believe the last engines to go fuel injection, big block ford 460 carbed, used an electric in tank pump.

I believe this was in 87. I think it used an electric pump in combination with a oil pressure switch (instead of the inertia switch).

I think they were low pressure as well.

True sorry forgot to add I am running 302 with 650 cfm carb

I have a 500cfm on mine but I do have a regulator I can adjust the pressure a little with.

It is the dead of winter and the truck (which is parked for the winter) has a full tank of gas. I am going to try it but literally the project is on ice at the moment.

RVs used in tank pumps for carbs because of distance between tank and engine

And yes it was common to use an oil pressure switch to Ground a fuel pump relay to power the pump, same switch as used now for oil pressure gauge, lol

Carbs have a float bowl reserve so engine can start up on that reserve, which is why on-engine mechanical pumps worked, unless you ran out of gas then it was a pain to restart because float bowl was empty, lol

The oil pressure switch was used with electric pumps in case of a fuel line break, in general or in an accident, engine would run out of gas and stall, 0psi oil pressure, electric pump stops pumping out fuel from the broken line

EFI needs fuel pressure to work, so electric pump needs to startup before the engine, even if it just runs for 2 seconds like our Rangers, so oil pressure switch wouldn't work
We got an inertia switch instead
But if the fuel line breaks the engine would stall and the 2 seconds at 0RPMs comes back into play and would shut off the pump without inertia switch being triggered

I have been meaning to add the switch and relay.

I do have an inertia switch and a toggle switch though.

I have overall been happy with my Mr Gasket add on pump but I noticed lately the fuel pressure has dropped from a tad over 7psi to a tad over 5psi and it runs rough when I get into the secondaries. Also below half a tank it starts farting around like it isn't getting enough fuel... so I think my pump is getting weak.

Have you looked into the fuel filters? Maybe it is clogged?

Are those PSI's from your regulator?

Pressure means nothing without volume (y)

Could be rusty gas tank or rusty pick up tube in the gas tank. I had the rusty pick up tube, took me a long time to figure that out.

Regulator was actually removed as part of the troubleshooting process. Pressure has been down a little since this started which is why I am suspicious. Pressure isn't bad but I have lost almost 2psi. And yeah, pressure and volume are two separate things... if I am losing pressure I wonder if I am also losing volume. It runs great on the primaries but the secondaries are no dice.

Both fuel filters are new. Secondary filter has a clear housing and has never had any debris in it. I cut the primary filter apart (that screws into the fuel pump inlet) and it was clean too.

The tank looked new inside when I installed it 3 years ago. Same for the pickup assembly.
