If an 88 has two pumps, the in tank pump is a lift or transfer pump, delivering flow at a low pressure. I'd guess 3--5 psi. Then you have an accumulator can, the high pressure pump on the frame rail and a filter.
The 87 I am working on has two pumps the one in the tank is the low pressure one ,the one on the rail is the high pressure pump . Going with a carb. so don"t need even a 1/4 that pressure.
thanks Earl43p Will that be enough to feed a carb.?
If you are going carborated, the 3-5 psi wont work, you need 7 psi. You can buy a regulator that will allow you to knock down the high pressure pump to 7. Or you can put a tube in place of the low pressure pump, so its down at the bottom, and put a 7psi pump in line (any off the shelf at your local parts store) or the mechanical pump for a carb motor, but that also requires the aux shaft to be replaced so its not quite worth the work.
Thanks Mikel89us ,may have a 3rd option , what is the max pressure for a carb? mechanical pump would require moveing the alternator and as stated other changes.
You will need 7 psi, any carb you can run on this motor will likely be a 7psi carb, import cars run anywhere from 3 to 9 psi, but why would you want to bastardize it like that? haha! My personal suggestion is go to the parts store and get a Mr Gasket 7 psi pump off the shelf. They are a little noisy but they work well, I used one on my racecar (2.3 mustang) for years and never had issues, except one leaked after a hard wreck.
