Ok this is my first post so I will intro myself.I have been building cars from a child i am a third generation car builder.I have been building race cars and chassis machining and welding for most of my life.In progress is my 85 retro prerunner,a 69 meyers tow'd and a class 9 buggy.I also paint rc cars and have won world championships and race 1/8 scale gas trucks.I currently paint r/c cars and work hand forming radical custom choppers for a highly recognized bike builder in AZ.:icon_welder:

I have a crummy toyo loco tranny in my 85 ranger motor is good but I have 31 10.50/15 tire and am getting ready to do a gear change and new trans.
What trans for a 4 cyl 5 speed truck would be the most durable for off road use? i have a few more questions and will look forward to providing some of my knowledge to others too.TIA Darrin

M5OD-R1. Hands down the most stout transmission bolted into a Ranger!

M5. You should be able to get the right one out of any 88+ 4-banger with a stick.

Yeah an M5 od would be your best bet but the 4 cylinder really doesn't provide enough power to break the Toyo Koygo... Besides you should just be glad you didn't get an FM trans...

The difference with the Mazda is not about "Breaking it" as much as it is wearing out the mainshaft bearings.

a BALL Bearing is designed to deal with RADIAL loads and in a transmission with helically cut gears (for quieter operation) generates AXIAL thrust loads which a ball bearing simply cannot deal with.

Thus with the new designed Mazda M5OD-R1

Pause for a small rant:
please use the full name not an "abbreviation" as there are other
transmissions you are inadvertantly describing with your misguided
attempts at abbeviation.

Or another way, what the hell is the matter with you, is your ISP
charging you by the letter?

But anyway, when Ford/Mazda designed the Mazda (M5OD-R1) transmission
they understood this reality and designed it with tapered roller bearings
that will handle ENORMOUS loads, Both radial and axial

Basically they used "More Metal" and in most cases "more metal" equals more reliability.

Yet, you CAN still destroy one.

Yes, even behind a 4cyl.
