Hey guys. New to the site. Bought a 92 Ranger off a friend last year and love everything about it. It is an XLT ext. cab 4x4 but actually wrecked it and am in need of information to repair it. I hit a curb and guard rail with it and the front end (diff, axle, etc..) broke off and cracked so i have been looking for a new front end. I have found one that i may purchase but it is out of a 2.9 ltr and i was wondering if the gearing would be the same as as the front end for the 4.0 ltr. I would appreciate any help given. :dntknw:

Welcome to the site. First I would make sure it is a Dana 35, as for the gear size someone else on here should be able to better help.

What year is the truck your looking at the axle? If it has a 2.9 it will most likely have the 'hybrid' dana 35, which could have 3.45 gears and would not match up to what you have now.

We will need to know what years and axle codes from both trucks.

I am also moving this to the proper forum.:icon_thumby:

take the oppurtunity you have and grab a dana 35 from an explorer for more strenth.....

No 2.9L ever came with a hybrid axle, you just have to make sure the gear ratio matches your rear.

Check the axle codes for your truck (and the donor) to see if they're the same

3.55, 3.73, and 4.10 are all possible on the 2.9L.

My 2.9L B2 has 3.45 gears. Or was that something that only came in the B2's?
That's because your B2 has a d28... 3.45 was not a ratio for d35s, therefore any rig equipped with a d35 will not have 3.45s gears. 3.0 and 2.3 were the engines that may have gotten the hybrid, therefore hybrids were only in rangers.

Hybrid axles are a '93-'97 Ranger thing, no 2.9L was produced during those years. Yeah yours should have a true D28 axle (12 bolts on the front).
