Hi All,

I'm looking at puting a new engine into my 84 Ranger. My Dad and I found one for $150 on Craigslist out of a 93. We went and checked it out and it looked great.

I have a couple research questions however.

Our only dilemmas about getting the new engine are that it has a it's fuel pump is in the gas tank. Would it be easy/worth it to rig up an electric fuel pump to the block? Like how the mechanical one is on the 84 block?

Also, it has the distributor less ignition system, with the two spark plug per cylinder head. It looks like has a plug in place of where the distributor would have gone. Is it possible to get the plug out and put in a distributor?

Is it possible to move my head onto the new block and use my stock intake manifold in order to get rid of the Fuel Injection?

I know this is a lot, and I'm leaning towards looking at a different engine because this sounds like a pain in the ^*^%&(%&)$!

I wanna do it right. And since it's all my money that goes into getting my truck going again, I wanna make sure I don't screw myself over.

My engine isn't necasirly shot, it just has more problems than anyone ever needs.

Well, a newer engine has a few differences that may or may not be easy to adapt...If the engine you are looking at is complete with wiring harnesses then you might want to switch over to FI...otherwise...too much running around...

You can hook up an external high pressure pump if you want to go Fuel Injected...but that is way more work than just adding the pump...and more than you may want to do...

The distributor was taken out of the DIS engines but some still have the shaft to run one...not sure about a 93 though...

I would suggest finding an older one to match your current setup...if you really need to swap it out...and since you didn't specify what was wrong with yours it's hard to say either way...but staying with a similar setup will give you the fastest, cheapest route IMO...

you are going to need the computer for that newer engine and complete wire harness

Pull the plug out and put your distributor in it, and put the head from your engine inplace of the 8 plugger, along with all the sensors from your old engine, check and see if the other engine has a bolt on block off plate where a mechanical fuel pump will go, if not put a electric fuel pump on the frame as close to the fuel tank as possible.

agree with Kenneth, easy swap.I don't think you will find a block off plate in that late of a motor,so justget a low pressure pump (7-9 lbs) and use your stuff.Good price

i got a 93 and yes it does hve the spot for a distributor and the fork that holds it down. What i dont know is if the crank has the stuff to spin a distributor.the head swap is the way to go though

That blank is the oil pump drive, just as the distributor is. The newer ones have a different oil pump location.

the cranks aren't compatible, different size main bearings... the crank doesn't have anything to do with the distributor drive, it's on the auxilary shaft, which should be swapable, although the gear that would have driven the dist should be there as many of the newer engines used that for the cam sensor, don't know if the gear is the same...
