I have a 1988 Ford Ranger Xlt super cab with a 2.3 engine, 2wd, and a mazda 5spd tranny (3bolt shifter). I am having problems with the tranny hanging in 4th gear and not wanting to come out. I replaced the clutch and pressure plate back in October and my tranny is doing fine after that. Here recently (Monday exact) it hung in 4th gear and wont come out. The clutch pedal is soft and easy to push in however it is sqeaky now. Can anybody tell me what is causing it to hang or know where I can find another transmission. My truck is in great shape and rare model so I want to try to fix it if at all possible. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. I'm best contacted via pone at (276) 779-3800 by call or text message or you can message me here or on my email at rangerking1@gmail.com

Thanks to all that read and special thanks to those that help

have you tried bleeding the clutch

Rare???? Ok......

Anyhoo, squeakin sounds like a throw out bearing to me.
I had a bearing come apart inside my transmission, made it do strange things.

no

have you tried bleeding the clutch

No 87Jeffrey, I havent tried to bleed clutch yet as for the clutch feels fine. It not the first time it has done this. It done it this ime last year and I replaced the clutch in Oct and never had problem with it then however I never replaced the throwout bearin, I just replaced disc and pressure plate. Now it has started again.

That is what I was told, and have thought about my self as for I replaced the clutch disc and pressure plate in oct when it done it then and never had any problem with it hanging after that. How ever I NEVER replaced the throw out bearing when I replaced clutch disc and plate. Should have but I didnt. Bought the disc and pressure plate from ESCORT_GTS on the forum so I didnt get the whole kit (not sayin his parts are bad cause it worked great til trans hung again). Only reason I didnt replace then was short on cash. Do you believe if I were to take trans out, and replace the whole clutch kit (plate, disc, bearing etc) that it would work right.

Oh yea, might be the pilot bearing too!!! Always forget about it, it will make bad noises when you have clutch pushed down only....

Check to see if the bracket that the clutch pedal is mounted to is broken and not allowing the clutch master cylinder to fully disengage the pressure plate.

In my experience with throwout bearings, they usually quit squeaking when you push in the clutch.

As far as your trans not coming out of 4th (only), I would think it's a synchro or a bent fork (been there, done that).

The pedal mount seems to be fine, as for the sqeaking stoping, idk as for if I let clutch out it kills truck cause of the tranny being stuck in 4th gear.
