i have a 89 2.3 ranger 5speed thats having problems. it's backfiring back into the air intake and looses power while driving when it does. it has actually burned the air filter. anyone have any ideas?

I don't remember if your year has a distributor or not but if it does, You should check the timing before driving it anymore. Sound like something happened to the timing...Check to make sure the belt/chain hasnt jumped a tooth too!

yep, sounds like timing belt, valve timing is off

Make sure no one has altered the layout of your spark plug wires as well, especially if you have the dual plug head (which I believe started in 89, but not positive...). I ran for the better part of a year with miswired coil packs. Drove me nuts because sometimes it would seem to run ok with low power, other times it misfired like a m...f...

Like everyone else said, start by checking the engine timing. If everything checks out start having a look into the ignition system. I think you've got the first year of DIS. Could be a faulty ICM giving you problems also.

like everyone else said timming,lol,89 was the first year for DIS ignition and the twin plug head, could be the timming belt, crank sernsor, coil packs or the module.

we recently replaced the engine with a 90 2.3 from my previous truck. it was running fine when the clutch when out. i just checked the oil and it is black and smells like raw gas. it's been driven less than 100 miles since the swap. it is also blowing black smoke. this is all a learning experience for me. i'm very capable i just don't have the knowledge. any help would be very appreciated.

I bet if you pull the vacuum line of the fuel pressure regulator you will have fuel in it. there is not suppose to be fuel in the vacuum line.

other option is a failed fuel injector... but regulator is more likely
