ignition switch problem

ok i have a 1990 ranger and i went to put my key in the ignition today and it wont go in. I have another ignition and key to install but doesnt the key have to be in the switch for you to remove it? Has anyone else had this problem before?

Have you tried turning the area where the key goes in a little to see if it will go in?
