This weekend I had to swap out my ignition control module on my 1990 Ranger with a 2.9L because it suddenly failed while I went inside wawa to get some gas. I found out apparently its a pretty common problem but just the same I figured id give a few tips to make it easiar for anyone else with the problem.
1. Pull off your spark plug wires, and mark them
2. Get a 7mm wrench and pull off your distributor cap, clean the contacts inside, it can't hurt.
3. Check your rotar on your distributor and make sure it doesn't need to be swapped out.
4. Pull the plug out of the back of the distributor and get a 7/32 socket wrench and unbolt the two bolts on the back of the module
5. slide the right side of the module down about half an inch and pull it out
6. Replace with a new module making sure to put a 1/32" layer of electrical greese on the new module
Most parts stores/ford will tell you to pull the distributor, but you really don't need to, it just makes it more of a bitch
This is probably useless to most people, but it took me forever to figure out what size the bolts on the module were so their 7/32
