Ok, this is an issue that I have been working on for a while, to little success. Now it has become a bit more important.

I have been looking for new ignition lock cylinders for my two first gens. New ones are easy to come by. Even NOS Ford ones are easy to get, and fairly cheap. I don't want just any lock cylinders. If I replace either of them, or both of them, I want them to match.

Earlier this week I lost my keys, drove the truck without them, and wasn't paying attention and locked the ignition, and it actually locked. While trying to circumvent the lock I damaged the cylinder, it still works, but it is now hard to get the key in and out, particularly in. Time for a new lock cylinder.

Now obviously these things have to be put together at some point. I would like to find a kit that lets me build my own, but I have so far been unable to find one.

Similarly I have been unable to find somewhere that will let me order matching cylinders without having to order 10 to 15 of them and hoping that two match.

So, anyone know where to find something like that. Or know how to take the little buggers apart? I am about to gut the steering wheel locks and go to toggle switch igntion/push button start because my wife keeps driving off with my keys in her cupholder.

Yep, you can pull the little key fingers out but watch out, there is little springs that will come flying out. I take the fingers out of the old one and put it in the new one in order.

As for wanting to key all the locks... I wonder if the fingers have number codes on them?

I found lots of info from google searching... rekeying ford passenger door lock

If you don't want to do it yourself any good locksmith can do it. I have a good friend that does that kind of stuff everyday.

I think the point of my post has been missed.

I am familiar with the internal construction of the cylinder, I know about tumblers, I know about the springs. I have to build lock cylinders for newer cars quite often.

My issue is finding the parts I want. The lock cylinders on older Fords are designed to not really be taken apart once they are put together. If I could get the center cylinder out of the assembly then I could probably make what I want easy enough, but I have yet to find a way to do it that doesn't destroy the part and I can't find a kit that is just a disassembled cylinder with a bunch of tumblers.

Would a retrofit of another (newer cylinder) that you are familiar with be possible? Dimensions aside there is no PATs to deal with.

Possibly, but I am not certain. I actually had not considered that. I know keyable kits were around by the mid 90s. Might be worth looking into.
