I am installing an Audiovox APS-596a in my 1991 ranger xlt 2.3l 5 speed and am having an issue with the starter inhibit. What wire do i tap into to inhibit the starter? I already have the relay. Any help would be apreciated!

EDIT: i found a wiring diagram for the relay i am using and it says that on terminal 87 i need to splice "From Igniton switch" on terminal 30 i need "to starter" and on terminal 86 i need "12v+ ignition". does this mean that on terminal 87 i need to splice the ignition wire closest to the drivers seat and on terminal 30 i need to splice in the side of the wire closest to the fire wall? and the terminal 86, do i just tap into a constant 12v+ source? like the source that goes to the fuse pannel?

What do you mean by "starter inhibit"? Is this to prevent accidentally grinding the starter while the engine is running via the remote starter?

its so that if you break into my truck, you cant just jam a flathead into the ignition and drive away. when my system is armed, you cant start my truck without hot-wiring it.

Ok, as I understand it you're wanting to do a starter kill relay, so that the truck won't start while the alarm is armed.

Here's your wiring.

On your Audiovox you should have a wire called "grounded output when armed" (it's an Orange colored wire on a lot systems). Connect this wire to relay pin #85.

You're going to have to cut your truck's starter wire; thus you'll have a "hot" side (from the key switch) and a "cold side" (to the starter).
a) Connect the starter side (cold) to relay pin #30.
b) Connect the key switch side (hot) to relay pins #87a and #86. Use a jumper. Either you have a relay socket; or you're going to be crimping 1/4" spade terminals on your wires, to plug onto the relay pins (terminals). Just jumper a small wire from the #87a connection to #30, or put the two wires together if you've got the socket.

Relay pin #87 is NOT used.

And you're doing a remote starter, too, right? The high-amp starter output from the Audiovox gets tied into the (cold) starter wire that's connected to pin #30. That will let you remote start while the alarm is armed, should the Audiovox not drop out the starter kill output automatically for remote starting.

Finally, you've got a 5-speed, so you'll need to catch the starter wire AFTER the clutch switch. Hopefully the model you're installing has manual transmission capability; if not, don't install it. Instead get one that does.

Good luck, but it's not that complicated. Just make sure that your connections are solid.

Should be Pink, changes later to Red / Lt Blue. Just make sure you're after the clutch switch- both sides of the switch are Pink there.
