Ignition Coil

If your coilpac goes bad look for an EXACT replacement.
... They are dependable and long lasting.. Why take a chane with anything else?
Big JIm

Umm, to avoid FoMoCo prices that approach RAPE?

Also, if company A's part fails under normal use, why reward them with MORE biz? I say give company B a chance to shine... after doing a LOT of homework on company B, nach.

There is no difference between the Motorcraft and the Visteon. They are both made on the same assembly line, just a different sticker. Visteon / Motorcraft say that the coils will deliver good performance for 100,00 miles, and they scrutinize over the testing (trust me). It takes specialized equipment to measure TEN-THOUSANDTHS OF AN OHM.

A better test would be to measure the inductance, especially on the primary side.

Um, yeah.....lotsa folks have meters that test inductance.....or wait, did you mean with a sig gen and a multimeter LOL.

Right. All that I am saying is Ford is extremely anal about there parts. Normal multimeter's only read to the tenth of an ohm or if your lucky one-hundredth of an ohm. Within 2 seconds the machine in the plant runs 8 or 9 tests, all with astounding accuracy. OEM is the way to go.

Yes, I agree, something companies like MSD, or Performance Distributers would never think about doing! For milliohm type of measurements, the measurement has to be a Kelvin, or 4-point measurement.

I've got a meter in my shop that will do a Kelvin type of resistance measurement. This is also called 4-point, or 4-wire. With this technique, there is a + and - force, and a + and - sense, making the 4-points. The
units here are OHMS, and you can see measuring a piece of wire results
in 0.00383 OHMS, or 3.83 milliohms:

I must admit I've never priced one.....but I guarantee the average joe has never heard of one, much less can explain the concepts involved with CEMF.

WOW. That is way over my head but some interesting test equipment. Thanks.

So... where does Autolite fit in the whole FoMoCo/Visteon/Motorcraft pantheon of Wall St. corporate shell games?

SAYing they'll deliver for 100K miles and WARRANTYing it are 2 different things. Seems a lot of posts on TRS talk about having to put in a new one... will note mileage when I see the next one.

Thanks!!

In addition to my scope, the piece of equipment I use the most is a Tektronix 576 curve tracer used for testing semiconductor devices (diodes, bipolar & FET transistors, triacs, SCRs, etc.). You can measure forward voltages, reverse leakages, breakdown voltages, bipolar transistor hfe, and Vce(sat), FET gm, etc.

Here is a shot of it:

Cool. You must be one heck of an electrical engineer.

I suppose you rate Snap On and Blue Streak and Bear as junk you can get at PepBoys too? Get real, most reputable shops have the equipment to test this crap to see if it fails, anyone with $5000 dollars to blow can have it too, so why would Mallory, Accel , MSD not have it? Do you think racers run shoddy junk just because they get paid money to put a sticker on the side of there car? Winning means it works as well or better then stock .$100, of millions spent in auto racing and none of those guys with the big budgets check this stuff out??? Remember if our governments and voters had not forced the big 3 to share info on their cars there would be no aftermarket, exploding Crown Victoria's , specing marginal tires on the Explorers, having to take the cab of the truck off (36 hours labor) to service the diesel fuel injectors . Yes OEM is GREAT Ford loves us go on about how good oem is and what crap the aftermarket is.

I guess you missed this post:

Neither Performance Distributors (sells Screamin Demon) or MSD have the equipment to do TC, T&H, or HTOL reliability testing on their components. As mentioned previously Ford, GM, and Chrysler require their electronic component suppliers to perform this testing, and are also standards specified by SAE. The European, and Japanese auto manufactures have similar requirements.

The same would apply to Mallory (their aftermarket products) and Accel.
