If you had to start from scratch, what 3 firearms?

Same as I have now:
1)Ruger GP100 357 SS 6" barrel for home protection. Nasty lead hollow point 38s are perfect. If you can't end a home invasion problem with a six shooter then you don't deserve to own a weapon.
2)Sig Sauer SS P232 380 for concealed carry. Carry weapons only need accuracy for 45 ft or less. If you feel the need to shoot at a fleeing perp more than 60 ft away, the police will be stuffing and cuffing you.
3)Ruger Mark III 22 Competition pistol with a Burris 2x32 scope for plinking cans and target shooting at the range. My personal favorite!

I also have a Ruger bolt action 77/22 for target shooting.
I do have an advantage living on 15 acres in the country.

Perfect balance for small game, self protection, and long distance with fair knockdown with cheap ammo (all but the 16)
If the end of the world came, and I was fully stocked on ammo...... I'd be able to survive off the land, and keep other folks from surviving off my hide when they got hungry and the easiest game was on 2 legs, at least long enough that everyone that still had guns and ammo, were good enough to hunt real animals.

A 16 gauge carries like a 20 but shoots like a 12....... just the way I like it.

.45 if they don't manage to out-run the bullet, a shot to the hand will take an arm with it, 9mm is a suicide self protection gun IMHO

22.250 In this area with the hills and heavy woodlands, the odds of you getting a shot over 300 yards are extremely slim, even rabbit hunting is kept close quarters due to visibility from the underbrush.

I have lots of weapons to choose from if I have time and a specific mission in mind. Anything from full-on assult-types, to bolt, lever and wheel guns to semi autos. However, If I had to choose just three, I'd still stick with my origional choice. The the Glock 36 isn't really a "pocket" pistol like Will's 22 but I carry it with me almost always and am comfortable hitting what I point at. I have gotten very quick at hooking a thumb under whatever shirt I have on and scooping it out of my waist band. Not nearly as fast or confidence enspiring as having one in your hand, but the next best thing. The 22 rifle is the primary grocery getter for small game at medium ranges. The 12ga will fire light bird shot to 3" magnum slugs for anything else.

While watching a show about the North Hollywood shootout my Dad said," All it would've taken was a squirrel hunter with a scoped .22 to take them guys out"......for the most part I agree. Even the most powerful handgun or rifle is nearly useless if we dont practice and if we are good with what we have then that makes all the difference. The guys are right who mentioned "muscle memory",just like in military training. When the crap hits the fan there might not be time to think and in that situation we do what we are trained or what we have trained at doing.

but if we are talking about surviving in the wild, I'd take a note from the cowboys. I know that they are black powder but it would work

Winchester 1873 44 40 (have it)
colt peacemaker 44 40 (looking for one)
and a side by side shotgun (have one)

The rifle and pistol us the same round so you don't have to carry separate cartridges. That is part of the reason that the 1873 was the "gun that won the west"

They wouldn't have to be blackpowder, Colt made smokeless peacemakers since shortly after the turn of the century. Reproduction '73's are good for smokeless as well.

Dad does cowboy action shooting with the .45LC in a model '94 Marlin, the rifle targets are at about 100yds... with the weak CA loads. It is obviously not going to go head to head with a 30-06, but is still a viable rifle.

Police officers are so ingrained in the "shoot for center mass" mindset that even SWAT tactics are based on the thought that nobody else could possibly have the calmness of action to aim anywhere else WHILE SHOOTING AT THEM during a tactical entry.... (There's a story I can tell that I'll share off forum about how I ended an arguement
with a friend who works in law enforcement and proved that the training that they still use today is flawed)

they hit the guys and kept hitting them where they were trained to aim.

the point being that you act the way you are trained, if you have trained for a certain scenario you cannot change your plan against your training no matter how you try.

And if the bad guys have read your rule book you are probably screwed before you start.

The Bad guys in that shooting were depending on the police to follow their training. If even one of those cops had been a little bit more of a "bullseye shooter" and less of a "Tactical shooter" that whole situation would have ended much sooner.

Personally I would take on that shootout armed with nothing more than my Ruger MkII 512BB pistol... and a couple magazines full of the CCI (or was it Federal?) "segmented" 22LR ammo...

Well I guess if you wanna stick with a pistol rfile cartridge you could go with the JUDGE .45/.410 with a 6 inch barrel. But even the 3 inch barrel would suffice, it can shoot birdshot,slug .410 or a .45 itsa nice "snake gun"

What's wrong with a 9mm? Hell a. 22 will work for me. I shoot constantly and have even competed. If you are going to shoot, you shoot to kill. If that time ever comes for me I WILL hit the person in the head. If they aren't close enough to get them in the head they aren't a threat yet.
