I have a 86 ranger with 2.0 carb. It now idles at around 1800 and fuel milage cut in half. I have replaced the fuel filter, air filter, PCV valve, and rebuilt the carb and still have the problem. Can anyone help or have had the problem before?

Yes and no...I've had the problem before...not sure if this will help...and without knowing what else has been done...you may want to update us on that so we don't go over things you've tried....

When you rebuilt the carb, did you check the float level? It could be the float is not set right and is dumping fuel...but usually you'd get the truck dying frequently from flooding and will not start until the excess is evaporated...

This probably won't cause high idle, but setting the fuel mixture or idle adjustment too high can...as will a vacuum leak, improper timing, or sticking accelerator...

You can check the accelerator by simply removing the cable and seeing where it sits without the cable attached...if there is an adjustment, go through the settings up and down until you hit the bottom (where the screw is not touching the base plate) then add a bit and check the idle...

what carb? Sounds like maybe vacuum leak....stock intake?...are all the ports plugged still?

Carb and intake are all stock. Float was replaced when rebuilt. It used to run and idle fine and the idle took off. all vacuum lines are hooked up. i hope someone can help this is driving me crazy and costing me money in fuel!

Sorry, but what carb was stock on that model year?

There were some (motorcraft 5200 for one) that have an idle adjustment screw on the far side of the carb...if that is set too high your idle will go up and your fuel consumption will increase...

Even though the float is new, does not mean it is set correctly...I had mine out three times before I finally got it to stop dumping fuel...someone posted a link on setting the carb up, but I can't recall who it was...

And did you check the timing...was the truck running fine before you rebuilt the carb?

It is a carter carb. truck was running fine and then.... the idle was 1200 then the next day 1800 and that is where it is now. So before rebuild 1800 idle - and after rebuild 1800 idle
