ok long story short my idler pulley grenaded on me last nite. Took the bolt, everything with it. I need to know what kind of bolt is in there because the auto parts store doesn't list it. Is it a dealer part? what kind of thread is it? can i get one from a hardware store or? I really need help quick someone was kind enough to let me pull it in their driveway for the night and i need to get it out by noon. thanks.

Go pull one off at the bone yard hopefully the bolt didnt break and if it did it taps out easy I can normally get one out with a center punch and a hammer or you can cut a slot with a dremel and use a screwdriver. GL

Thanks guys but got it all together. ford had the pulley and bolt and everything as a unit with the bearing for $40.

how does it grenade? loose bolt or what? It'd be good information for those unsupecting owners of a 97 4.0....

I would say bearing failure.

Wow......the bearing failed/unscrewed the bolt too.....sounds like the work of Gremlins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

mine did that 2 years ago on my 94 explorer.
The bearing locked up and spun the bolt out. The damn idler pulley flew off and hit the power steering pulley and took a chunk out of it.
I was running late to work when this happened and said F ..k :thefinger:it leave the ex at home a took the car to work. This happen on a cold January night too....Those damn gremlins......

thats exactly what happened. at first i thought the pulley siezed and sheared the bolt off. so we spend 20 minutes extra taking off the whole bracket in single digit weather, just to find out the bold had walked out. so if any of you hear that pulley, REPLACE IT. and replace the tensioner one at the same time, as i found it was ready to blow to.

Stinking Gremlins !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

damn Engineers.

engineers? i mean yeah they are bastards but what did they do this time?

lol i just remembered my buddy's an engineer, i'm going to punch him in the balls next time i see him

the direction of the pully spins in such a way that if the pully seizes, instead of just snapping the belt, it creates a projectile that destroys other stuff under the hood.

ahh, yes, i see... i was thinking it's good, because it doesn't break the bolt off and cause you a problem of removing the bolt...

I could care less about the broken bolt so long as the damn thing doesn't break my alternator, fan, and radiator...

besides, the belt would slide over the smooth surface then snap before the pully wouldbreak the bolt.
