I went to wash my ranger today and after I washed it, I hear it idling fairly high. Here is the story. I washed it and when I went to get my little brother, It would idle pretty high. When I start it, it goes all the way up to 2500 RPM's and slowly climbs down. After a while, I went to change sprinklers at my bosses place and I left it running for a minute to go change sprinklers. It was settling on 750 RPM's and than when I came back, it was idling 1500 RPM's. I never had this problem! What could be the problem????

Make sure that both the IAC and temp. sensor are plugged in, since you washed it might not hurt to disconnect both and shoot some WD-40 into both connectors on both sensors and then plug them back together. Both of these control idle speed to some degree.

On startup computer opens IAC(idle air control) all the way, so high RPMs, then closes it according to engine coolant temp and intake air temp, if engine is cold idle stays up and goes down as engine warms.

A/C compressor coming on will kick up the idle.

Defrost uses the A/C compressor, so if it was left in the defrost position in the dash the compressor will be cycling on and off.

Also check the engine temp, if left idling and temp starts to rise the computer will kick up the idle to cool the engine.

I fixed it! Checked IAVC, A/C compressor, The sensors, and heck I even checked fan. Didn't help until I checked my air filter. It was real dirty and ready for a new air filter. I put it in and it runs a whole lot better. I guess it was a dirty air filter! It was a K&N.
