Idle trouble Help PLZ

I just got back from a week long trip and started my truck (a 1988 ranger 2.9l automatic) and the idle was extremely low, i got to a gas station and went to start it again and it died by the time i put it in drive. i had to start it and throw it into drive before it could die to make it home. ive had the same problem all day, i start it, it barely idles put it in drive and it dies, if i do get going it just dies at the first stop sign or light i have to stop at. The plugs and wires are only about 4 to 5 years old, (ive heard that can be the problem) and i really have no idea how to fix this, is there just a simple way to "turn the idle up" or is there a part failure? please any info would help,

theres a little motor that controls the idle speed, but it doesnt seem like you are too interested in it. if it is stuck at a certain low idle speed, you can adjust the throttle screw and manually adjust the idle upwards. what that will do is keep the throttle partly open.

not the best fix but it will get your truck idling better.

DO NOT adjust the idle via the screw on the TB it is a setting for TPS baseline and has nothing to do with idle speed, pull codes, run the self tests, see what you get. Pull the IAC off and clean it, that may help fix your problem, if it was a sudden problem then chances are that the IAC is bad.

Yes it drives perfectly fine otherwise, it made a 200 mile trip home only problem is idling when stopped and yes it is a sudden problem, it drove and idled fine when i left except that it was running a little colder than usual. Thanks for the info, ive done some reading and it seems that the IAC (idle air control valve correct?) seems to cause a lot of people trouble so as suggested that will be my first step, then ill go from there thanks for the info

the iac motor is horrible to deal with dont bother with the bypass kit it doesnt do that much to correct and before buying new u can check the wreckers chances are ull find one near new good luck
