New to forum, I just purchased my 4th Ranger a 86 four wheel drive with a 2.9 V6. I am having a issue with idling smoothly and when I let off the gas at stops it idles erraticly and sometimes dies, the Map sensor is new. It does have a leaky valve cover on the driver side but not really related I'm thinking a vaccuum line or idle position? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Idle Air Control Valve. Its located on the top of the motor on the intake plenum. Its got one connector and is held on by 2 bolts. Sometimes i have heard one can get away with taking it off and cleaning it out with throttle body cleaner, and reinstalling it. You can try that being that it is relatively expensive to replace, but chances are that it is bad.

It looks to have been replaced recently, I'll check it anyway.

Yep +1 with AIC...also could be the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), & your right to suspect vacuum too...spary all lines with carb cleaner...if it smooths out or picks up RPM...zero in on that area.

hope that helps

My 88 did this same thing not too long ago and it was the tps sensor

Thanks guys I appreciate all the info, suggestions...I think I did ok on this one 80K on motor 4 wheel drive is in great working order, and pretty straight truck all around. Bought it for $700, added new tires $300. Think I came out alright.
