I have an idle problem on a '96 Ranger 4.0. When it is in park or neutral, the idle will surge to about 1500 rpms, then drop to about 500 rpms, and repeats the cycle about every two seconds. It does this whether cold or hot. I thought it was a vacuum leak and started there, but then the CEL came on. I pulled the code and got code P1507, which the internet says is the idle air control. I disconnected the harness into the IAC while the engine was running and it died, and all the readings from a VOM were inside specs. Does this mean the IAC is not the problem? If so, does anyone know what else can throw the P1507 code?

This is my first post, but about my tenth problem with the truck. I've been able to find everything else by searching. You guys are awesome and have a great website.

Thanks
Frank

my truck did the same thing. Replacing the IAC should take care of your problem. Its only about $80 from the dealer, but make sure they give you the right gasket. it should be a rubber o-ring gasket.

Cool. Cleaned the old IAC and it stopped surging but idled at about 300rpms. Bought a new one at Autozone for $43, threw it on, and problem fixed. Thanks for the help!
