My credo
I may not know what the future holds, but I know who holds the future.
I have a 2002 Ranger XLT 4x4 w 4.0 V6 SOCH (VIN: 1FTZR45E82PA18054). How do I know which transmission I have? I read there are 4R44E/55E and 5R44E/55E. I'd just like to know which I have so when I go searching for new filter, etc., I can be sure I'm getting the correct part for my transmission. I expect this changing filter/fluid on these isn't much different than other auto-trans but if there are tips, they're welcome.

Look on the drivers door jamb...where the certification label is..they'll be a spot that says "trans" with a alpha/numerical code under it. Take that code and look in the tech library under trans codes.

And also while you are there plz study the methods for sensibly changing the fluid and filter, you will most likely find it to be considerably different than you think.
Good luck with it there :)

2002 Ranger XLT V6~4.0L~SOHC 4x4 is same Frame+WheelBase+DriveTrain as my 2001 SportTracJob2.
You've got a 5r55e Trans with 4x4DeepPan+4x4Filter & 4x4TailHousing connected to your 1354 TransferCase.

Deeper 4x4 Pan on 4x4 version of 5r55e Trans requires 4x4 Filter with extended suction tube on bottom side:
FordMotorCraft# xL2z-7a098-da \ ft-134

Yep, best to read up & watch videos on a full service for a 5r55e Trans:
* Drop Pan
* ReTorq ValveBodyBolts
* New Filter
* New PanGasket
* New 5~7qts of MerconV
* Adjust Bands
Personal preference is to do this every 33kMiles\4Years, along with renewing fluids in TCase & Diffs.
Click here for more info on 5r55e Trans.

Door sticker has a "D". According to the tech library, for the 2002 4.0 this is the 5R55E transmission. Thanks to all for the info and recommendations.
