Has anyone done any sort of forced induction on the 2.9? I was thinking a California MAF conversion and a Centrifugal Supercharger with an electric clutch so that I have boost when I need it and Fuel economy when I dont. Any Thoughts? On my 1991 Ranger 4x4
Switched superchargers have existed, but they are pretty rare. You can't just slap a AC compressor type clutch on any old supercharger because the air cant flow past the vanes while it's not spinning. You'd essentially just be closing the entire intake off (i.e shutting the engine off)
This is why turbo chargers are better for fuel economy because the boost pressure and vanes can be adjusted on the fly to provide power, or economy.
Ok, so just a forewarning, this post is going to be heavily edited, re-written, and changed throughout its construction. This is being written as a post to document the restoration of a truck that was a terrible candidate for restoration, and to offer explanation to others that read my posts...
Submitting this as a placeholder for now, but posting the attachments and gist of the article. This is going to be a rather in-depth write up, and will take some time to properly compile. Mods: Please do with this as you see fit! Thank you!! CRITICALLY IMPORTANT NOTE: To those who find...

Read all of this. I already went down the path you're taking.
Yes, this is about a 2.9L. No, I'm not just going to put a 4.0L in it. Yes I understand it's easier. Yes I understand the 2.9 is a turd. This is about feasibility, not cost and time effectiveness. ...because I like banging my head against a wall. JEEZE MOM! Ok, now that I've gotten that out...

DIY AutoTune is a good place to start. Used ones can be had on eBay on the cheaper side. Microsquirt is the one I'd recommend, or if you can find one, watch eBay for one called a DIYPNP.
There's another shop near philly pa that sells pre fab units that are ready to plug into a Ford 60 pin harness. They're around ~$500 or so.
If you search the "really, really bad idea" thread, deathbypsi posted a video of doing the install on his BII. Took 20-30 mins.
Mine took three days, but the majority of that time was spent in my driveway with a laptop trying to make it run. There was nothing out there that was made public for the 2.9 before I posted all my crap to a bunch of sites.
