Ok I am about to go buy a new starter for my 1998 ranger, but I am not sure what size motor I have...Is there a easy way to ID it?

the first way to count the spark plug wire!!!!
4 wire- 4clyinder
6 wires-6clyinder
If you look under the on the intake it should like 3.0l or 4.0l or 2.5l
for 98 rangers

if it has 4wd it came with either
3.0l v6 came with a U in the vin
4.0l v6 came with a X in the vin
if it has 2wd it came with either
2.5l 4 clyinder came with a C in the vin
3.0l v6 came with a U in the vin
4.0l v6 came with a X in the vin

thats a good reason but my buddys 98 had a 4 cylinder with 8 spark plug wires

There is an emissions label on the radiator support, it should say what the engine is on it. There is usually a sticker on a valve cover too.

The sticker under the hood says 2.5l but I am not sure that the motor wasent changed by previous owner.

2.5l i-4

The picture of the 4.0l is actually a 1997 model, but the other two are in 1998-00 trucks. This should give you a pretty good idea... However, if yours doesn't look like any of these, let me know, and we'll figure out what was swapped into it... :icon_thumby:

:annoyed:

working at an auto parts store, i see this daily.

i ask someone about their car (engine size, brake type....)
and they look at me like i'm retarded.

KNOW YOUR VEHICLE!

you drive it daily and take care of it, at the very least know your basics.

i actually had a guy tell me he had just bought a V8 ranger and i got excited, went outside to go see it only to find out the dumbass had a dual plug 2.3....:icon_twisted:
he never even looked under his hood since he bought it.
you'd think he would notice the lack of power :dunno:

maybe its just me but stuff like this annoys me

It wasent my truck until after it was wrecked...
and now I am getting to know it real well :)
