Hi I have a 1993 Ford Ranger manual 5 speeds 2.3 literd. I realize it's an older truck but I love that little thing it's a good little truck. Recently I started to have some trouble. I'm driving and all of the sudden feels like it's running on 3 cylinders.... literally. . So I push on the clutch rev the engine and eventually it clears up and I keep on driving. Doesn't do it at startup except one time and when it did I could smell gasoline around the engine block. New spark plugs and Spark plug wires So I'm thinking either the coil pack or the ICM.

The ICM is around $150 which is significant for me so before I replace it I'd like to take it to AutoZone and have them test it but I can't locate it I'm not exactly sure what it looks like I kind of do know but I kinda don't. I'm not even sure if it's around the manifold or somewhere else. Does anybody have any pictures or diagram and can somebody tell me where I should be looking for it. I looked at pictures on line but I really can't find anything looking like,it anywhere.

Maybe a bad ground on the icm. I'm not sure since I'm not a mechanic (and I can't afford one) I could use some help. I really need to get that fixed.. it happens more and more. .

You guys are great I appreciate all your help.

Thank you

I am not sure on your truck ,,,but most of them are under the hood,,passenger side firewall,,, has a bolt in the center that holds on the wiring harness ,,, and two more bolts that hold the computer in,,, it has a string of numbers on it after you pull it out,,, and if you remove it,,, make sure to pull off the neg battery cable first !!!

try and find a OBD1 scanner and see if you get any codes,, if you cant find the old scanner a test light can be used redneck way,,, google it lol

I will have a look tomorrow. I'll keep you posted. Thank you.

icm should be located on radiator support (at least it is on my 94 w/4.0l)

it should look like this for your truck

not 100% sure yours is on the radiator support though.

I wouldnt think it would be the ignition control module just causing a misfire on 1 cylinder, most of my experience with those is they wouldnt even run. Autozone can check them for being good or not(or at least they used to).
