How about some recomendations, I want one for obd2 as well as earlier domestic vehicles so I'd rather get one that can read them all.

Do you want a scan tool? or just a code reader? A scan tool will run you a lot more than just an OBD 11 or 1 or CAn reader.

Scan tool.... Auto xray brand i have the top of the line scan tool. works with OBDI and OBDII, as well as the new CAN standards. Code reader... any cheap one on the market.

yeah I want a scan tool, something that has internal code descriptions and is upgradeable. I never know what I may work on next. I thought mabye some of you guys could mention which ones you use and like-or dislike.

OTC Genisys. I work with it every day(version 2.0) and it's a great scan tool No major bug. Except on some vehicule when you want to access airbag or ABS module. You can work on '80-'96 domestic. from 96 to today you can work on domestic, asian ,european , Heavy truck.and generic OBDII. it's a very complete scan tool. But the price is high to because you have to purchase all the module separatly(domestic, asian, european, heavy truck, etc,ec,etc).

You basically have to decide if you want to spend less than 250 or more.

I have a 180 dollar digimoto package that interfaces with a lappy. It will read codes, reset the light, and monitor a few sensors at once. The monitoring isnt very real time unless I only monitor maybe three sensors (I doubt there is any sub-$400 package that will read very fast). They have a forum at their website but the company owner seems to do this as a second job/labor of love, and doesn't appear to answer questions very often. I think what I bought is acceptable, but I didn't have any problems using it.

The Ethos from Snap-on is a pretty good little unit. I have a Solus and am very happy with it. I am not too sure if the Ethos can also do pre OBD2 or not.

^Yeah it can, we were using it on my 94 the other day and a 92 something or other. Its a pretty good tool along with the solus.
