I want a play truck

Yeah, the M's were strong motors, and you can get buttloads of torque out of them. The black bronco in my pics and vids is powered by a 400M. The only down fall of the M motors is not as much variety in aftermarket parts.

As for my 460, it reciently was rebuilt. .030 over with sealedpower pistons and rings. The head deck on the block was evened up, meaning, even from the factory, the deck height might vary .010" from front to back. It helps keep all the cylinders at the same compression.

My motor came out of a '76 lincon, so it's got the D3VE heads. Look for those, or the D0VE heads. I had them ported out.
Cam is mild, for off idle power, intake is a Weiand stealth high rise
600 cfm edelbrock carb. No need to put too big of a carb on, this one has never been not enough fuel, even when at full throttle in deep mud for an extended period of time. (hehehe that brings back warm memories)

OE style dist, cap and rotor, msd wires, accell blaster coil, autolite copper plugs.

Guy's at the machine shop, (Knowlton's Thunderheads in bethel, MN) said that this will produce 400+ hp, and 500FtLbs.

I believe them, this thing has ALOT of grunt, even with high gears. I was thinking I would change out gears to 4.56's, but I havn't been in a situation to need them yet.

I was through 2+ feet of fudge-like mud this fall, and was able to spin all four tires as fast as I wanted. Only got stopped cause my bumper hit dry ground while going through a hole at the far end where everybody was getting stuck.

your truck looks real nice soylent_green. i like all the older trucks. older cars too. i hate the new cars and trucks with all the round bodies and stuff. idk why but all the old boxy looks appeal to me. oh and how much did all that come out to be soylent?

Machine shop, and parts on the motor came out to be just under 3K. That includes all new engine accesories, ignition, basically everything under the hood.

I bought a mallory fuel pump and regulator, and a 32 gallon fuel cell. $300.

Tires and wheels cost 1000.

Bought the truck for 1000.

So, about 5K total invested, and a damn capable trail rig, and relaiable too.

that would be a real nice way to go then. there is actually a 79 f250 with a 460 in it for sale around here. 1000 but the guy is asking OBO so it could be talked down

It's just a great starting point, if it runs good, just put some tires on it and you're ready to go!

Hopefully you'll have better luck with parts than I had.....

This is the actual add

http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/car/504005417.html

i emailed him and asked him what the miles are and for some pictures. also asked him if it was stock or not. all i know is if i get a good running f250 with a 460 in it, the first thing im gonna do is either hack off the muffler and put on a flowmaster 44 or run straight pipes out the back. i like big block noise. haha :icon_hornsup:

Go for it dude. you won't be dissapointed!

I've got 2 1/2 " straight pipes with glass packs. take a listen:

wow that sounds really good. thankfully ive got a buddy and his dad who knows A LOT about making engines perform more. he'll be able to help me out. as long as i can take some crap about picking a ford. haha they both love chevy's. but he'd help. im gonna look into that 79 f250. ill make sure i let you know how it turns out

73-79 Ford trucks are the toughest trucks ever produced, and probely the toughest that ever will be produced.

Cant beat them for a play toy. If you get a 70's model get the 400M, They got the big block Torque but are a little eaiser on gas then a 460. I got one in my 78 F350 and its a hellacious motor. Its got a edelbrock 4bbl, headers, RV cam, and some other goodies. It'll hang right with a 460 with a load. If you get one definatly get a 4sp, alot more control over the power, and 100X more durable. Granny gear is the most useful thing ever invetned.

The 70's trucks had the strongest frames, the strongest axles, the toughest body panels, and the easiest to work on.

73-87 Chevys arnt bad either. Dodges wernt bad, but the later ones had suck ass trannys.

Fords are your best bet for an woods romper.

My old dually is only 2wd....so its far from a woods beateer....but the 73-79's are THE toughest trucks ever built.

later,
Dustin

yeah my buddy keeps telling me to get an old chevy. haha he's partial to them though. though i do understand his point that the parts for a 350 are gonna be a lot cheaper and a hell of a lot more choice. but like ive said. i like big block. haha. and how it is on gas isnt something i'm worried about. i'd only worry about that if i did any kind of major driving with it. i'll get it and only use it to play either in the woods or in the mud. thats why i'm only even gonna get liability insurance

i have got 2 70's rigs for sale right now......both are built up and would make good projects....
