After a few weeks of driving my truck, Its seems i've finallly fixed it!....with out spending as much as i thought i would:shok: I bought the truck when it having an emmisions light on. Took it home and found out that cyl. 1, 4 & 5 was missfiring, total of 5 codes, multiple missfire, missfire under 1000 rpms.

Damn if Ford dealership said i needed a new engine:shok: well, i paid their diagnostic fee and went my way. They had said it have 0% compression on cyl 1 and 20% on 4....but they never gave me a sheet on it, just wrote it on the bill...:icon_confused:...so i had my doubts on it. I was about to say the hell with it and do a 5.0 swap, been lookin for donor a vehicle to pick up for cheap. But instead....

I bought a Haynes manual, a multimeter (to check the coil), tourqe wrench, code scanner, oil & filter and fuel filter.

I'll go by tanks of gas, first tank was no change to anything and that netted me a 19.92 mpg

Second tank i did the oil w/filter & the fuel filter to get a 20.22 mpg

Now i was messing with the coil to check to see if it wasn't workin, and noticed the wires seemed strange compared to the manual, so i messed with them, but i did draw a picture to show where they were at before i started. Anywho, all said and done i my truck doesn't run ruff anymore after changing the wires around to their right places. The light didn't start blinking after letting it idle for 5 minutes, which it always would after a short time. Disconnected the battery to erase codes and even took it out to get a fresh tank of gas to see what i get for millage now, no lights so far:icon_thumby:

After this tank i'm gonna change the spark plugs, or at least look them over to see how they are.

All in all, not to bad since Ford quoted me 5k to change over to a remanufactured engine. Thought that if anyone on here as an odd thing like this they can learn from it.....oh and first time i went off the haynes manual saying what order the coil was, it didn't work when i changed it, untill i realized :icon_idea: the coil was on backwards. Problem solved:D

first off, F the dealership, they'll charge you $50 to get water from their water fountain. i dont go there unless they are fixing a recall or it's a last resort.

secondly, most auto parts stores will pull codes for FREE on 96ish and newer vehicles (depends on the store) i dont know how much you paid the dealership, but i'll bet you could've bought one of the OBD readers for about the same amount.

but hey, glad you got it fixed, dont be surprised if the codes come back on after a few hundred miles tho

I mostly paid the dealership to give the whole truck a look over and to take a look on the engine, also to see if there was any recall's that werent taken care of. I've had better experiance with that dealership with my g/f's '95GT mustange she had; her fuel pump went bad and had a few places say rebuild the transmission, it would just stop moving like now power was going to the wheels and no codes were really popping up. The Ford dealership held the car a few days to drive it to find the problem....in my view, sometimes it helps to go to the dealership depending on who's helping you there. Saved her hundreds of dolllers if not over a thousand and they didn't even charge her for the three days she had it there...just for the part and time spent switching it out...would have cost much more for a rebuild from them but they did us right in the past. I'll drive the truck for a few hundred more miles and see how it goes, and maybe make a call to the manager/supervisor there to let them know how things were handled.

One other time i had good results from a dealership was when her brother had a '00 mustang and it was running rough, took it into a tuffy and they did spark plugs, wires, and said it needed a new left exhaust manifold.....he only got the plugs and wires done thankfully by the time i looked into it. Took it to Pepboys and they said a whole new engine! I did some research and came to the idea it might be a bent valve....they wouldn't take off the cover to look it over and i was out of my town so no tools for me to try to see. Decided to take it to a Dealership and told the mechanic what was up, turned out i was right and saved my g/f's brother thousands $.

Went AdvancedAuto to have the codes read a few times on my previous cars/trucks when needed but I decided to pick one up for future use.

Truck feels like it drives smoother now and doesn't even hesitate after sitting at red lights for to long. But for a truck that has 182k miles, i'm sure the light will come back on sometime later.
