I Should be the Proud owner...

I'd say the motor might be shot if it overheated. You can't even check out the 4x4 or hubs if it is not working. Stay away from it unless you don't care if you have to spend a lot on something that you are not sure what is wrong before you get it home and then get the motor running to see what else you have to spend money on. One of my buddies just bought his son a nice 89 BII 4x4 with the 2.9 liter motor, auto with 68,000 one owner miles. He paid $1,500 for it and does not have to do anything for it except fill it up and drive it. It is very clean and I would liked to have bought that one. He found it in the Florida Auto Trader. It realy looks nice.

Gay! I just gave away a perfect set of 2.9 heads/intake manifolds....

still a perfect 4.0/5.0 swap canadate!

Really? As a automotive technician that offends me to some degree.

Don't be surprised. Some mechanics are bastards. Had one locally that used to "change" oil for the elderly at a cheap price. Less than the cost of the oil in most occasions. Turns out he would just put the vehicle in his shop for a bit, add oil if it was low, and then take it back out with a new "change at xxxxxx" sticker.

Somebody ended up catching him. An older man had a feeling something was amiss when his vehicle broke down, had his son look at it. Pure sludge.

Guy no longer has a shop and moved out of the area.

Those kind of scams are all too common, I am trained as a tech myself and do all my maintenance and most of my repairs, years ago I was working massive overtime and the auto trans in the wife's 85 LTD wasn't shifting right, I had her take it to the Ford dealer where we have spent a ton of money over the years on new and used vehicles. They tried to sell her a complete tranny overhaul to the tune of $1,500 (twenty years ago), after I got over the urge to go down there and rip someone's head off I changed the vacuum modulator and the fluid and it was shifting like new again. THE CROOKS.
