Ok so I found a dana 35 from a 94 explorer then I found a 8.8 out of a 01 explorer. So I thought thats great disc all around. One problem though the gears! The guy said I could buy the 8.8 out of the 94. So my question is should I
A. pull the gears from the 94 8.8 and put them in the 01 8.8 or
B. pull the axle shafts from the 01 8.8 and install in the 94 8.8

Thanks

I'd just pull everything from the 94 and run that, with drums it makes it a bolt in replacement.

If you really want the discs... Id prolly regear the 01 exploder axle, I believe they are beefier and are 31 spline?

The 8.8 from the 01 Explorer should be 31 spline and with disc brakes makes a sweet bolt in rear axle. If you don't mind spending the money to regear it to match the gearing from D35 then it would definitely be the way to go.

Well that's what I'm wondering would it be easier to just swap the axle shafts than it would be to regear? I would much rather put 5.13's in the front and back ( need some more money first) than to install like the stock 3.73 gears then later down the road put in the 5.13's

First, the Explorer rear is NOT a "bolt in", welding is required.

Second, you cannot swap the axle shafts, they won't fit they are both fatter and longer.

Damit! i wouldn't think that they would change the axle shafts in a 8.8 because and 8.8 31 spline is a 8.8 31 spline but apparently not. But thats why i'm not paid to think:icon_twisted: One more question the gears from the 94 8.8 will fit the 01 8.8 right?? Man I hope so!
