I have a 98 ranger 4 banger I dot know what tranny but there is a loud clicking noise coming from the front of the tranny any suggestions?

Do you know if it is an auto or manual?

Also, take the trans out and look for clicky things.

Is it a clicking or a “clunking” that sounds when you put it in gear and start to move? I ask because if so, it could be something as simple as a worn-out U-joint (there’s one right behind the tranny, where it mates up to the yoke that attaches the driveshaft). But maybe you already knew that.

If you have a 4x4 with push-button engagement, then there will also be a small motor down there that is known for being problematic. Not sure if they cause a clicking when they go bad, but it’s something to check. In regard to the tranny itself, have you checked the fluid level?

Welcome to TRS :)

Yes, manual or automatic?????

Manual will be M5OD-R1(M5R1)
Automatic will be 4R44E

Starter motor gear may be loose, and touching ring gear

Manual trans could be clutch parts, does noise change when you push pedal down?

The flex plate broke near the center or the torque converter bolts are falling off. It has happened.
