I have a 87 4x4 with the 2.9 V6 and the 5 speed manual transmission.
the transfer case is the manual lever also.

the truck started acting like the parking brake/ rear brakes were locked up.

I try to drive forward and i have to really give it hell to go forward, but in reverse it does fine.

I jacked up the rear of truck, put the truck in neutral ( 5 speed) and with t-case in 2Hi ...and I spin the rear tires by hand..they are free and turn easy ( alot of slop in differental)
but the rear drive shaft wont spin when I tried... I grab a big set of Pliers and clamp on it and it is real hard to turn.

I put the transfercase in neutral and the rear drive shaft spins free and easy, and turns the tires like it should.

In neutral with the engine running, i can push the clutch in and out and the truck will move slightly, and you can hear the engine rpms change.

I have a 84 4x4 with the 2.8 v6 5 speed, and manual t-case that I can swap out with if I have to.... I think they will interchange.

So I am thinking something is messed up /binding up inside the 5 speed .

Any ideas of what is going on?
Thanks Indy.

Well the FM145 was a wonderfully delicate transmission, quite easy to break and quite hard to fix. Kinda like those puzzle balls.

Can you spin the drive shaft with the trans in neutral and the t-case engaged in 2-hi?

No... with the t-case in 2hi and transmission in neutral it is really hard to spin using pliers.
But with both in neutral it will spin.

Trans is FUBAR. If you pull the pan down you can probably see the problem.

Just great....lol

so will the Toyo Koygo out of my 84 swap in no problem?

If so I will just swap it out as one unit ( transmission and t-case) togther.

The TK should work, but I don't know what all is involved in the swap.

As for rebuilding an FM transmission, well that is a lost cause. As I said they are overly complex inside, and the special tools that are needed (actually needed, not optional), well you can go buy a good M5OD and all the other parts needed for that swap for a lot less than you could buy the tools for, if you can find them.
