I bought, as a reward for more than two years of working at unsatisfying job and bringing all money home so my wife could start her consulting Company, an '84 Bronco II 2.8l 4WD 240000 miles from California.Sound like a rock! The only big problem-I'm driving from one gas station to another. So I kept on looking untill I found '87 2.3l diesel from 4DW Ranger with tranny and transfercase. Now I have to do the swap.I have really hard time to find any information. First of all I'm confused because my engine had Intercooler and I didn't find any mentioning about that in '87 Ranger. This is my very first Diesel .So far I had 5 motorbikes and 15 cars all gas.I worked on all of them, rebuilding engines, trannys and doing bodywork with paint jobs on few.I know I can do it! I just need directions.Today I mounted Diesel on engine stand ready for wash, dealing with corrosion and replacing whatever has to be replaced.I 'm confused which books to buy and where to find info about best replacements. I need starter, glow plug controller, clutch disk and clutch bearing and so on.Money are of limited supply so I'd like to buy things once.My friend just opened tire shop and I can use his space and equipment. No one there is familiar with the diesels. So maybe one of you diesel aficionados could mentor me and I promise to be attentive student and keep documenting the progress making this way tutorial for future swappers. I posted picture of my Bronco here: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=151975 Thank you in advance. Bronka from Canada

Hi im Ben, im college student who is going to school to b come a diesel mechanic, u dont need an intercooler, but its highly recommended that u have 1 for that turbo, considering this is ur diesel pay extreme close aattention to the fuel pump mounted on thwarted engine, key things u need to know is Mark timing just like any other build but the key timing Mark is the fuel pump, ur fuel pump is timed to the engine, I need some pics of the front and side of the engine to find the location of the fuel pump

If it isnt carubreted it would be in the same spot as a fuel pump on a gas truck wouldnt it?

Its a diesel, diesels run directly off the timing chain, belt, or gear drive

Thanks for your responses. Yeah, I'll have to deal with all the belts, and here the question comes back: which engine do I have? I don't have the vin #of the donor Ranger and, as far as I'm concerned, this engine can have it's own history. I didn't buy it from the original owner but from a guy who wanted to do swap himself and then decided to sell his Ranger and the diesel and buy bigger truck. There is the serial number but I can't decode it without some decoder. I'm also rally confused about electrical wiring. The harness is in bad shape with some wires cut and some with damaged insulation. There are few ground wires, this are the easiest, one to the battery, few to the alternator and glow plugs. What about the wires on the fuel pump, sensors etc.? I'm starting to feel frustrated I can't pay someone to do it for me. I'm starting to understand the power of information!
Today for fun I'll start to mount new seats in my BII. I picked up a pair of black leather, motorized, heated and with rails seats from BMW convertible. The motors were stuck and the seats were blowing the fuses. The problem is the floor in BMW is flat and the rails are 4" further apart. I'm lifting everything 1 3/4" off the floor. Cheers

In diesel u really dont need much wiring, key things thats need wiring is glow plugs, starter, alternator, oil pressure sensor and coolant temp sensor, and oil/block heater ,ur engine could be a couple different engines, Im not real familiar with what small diesel engines Ford used, it could b a Cummins 4by, a Ford 4cyl diesel, or 2.0 or 2.3 converted to diesel, I would the serial number and type it into Google and see what u get,

best bet is to make some cursory mount of wood and plate, and get it running outside of the truck so you know exactly what and how things are.

go one system at a time, fuel, cooling, hvac, trans shifting/clutch actuation and accessories.

from there it wont matter if you run a genset, lawntractor, boat, or bronco 2 with it because you will appreciate it for what it is and integrating it into anything wont be worrisome at all.

while those are logical potentials, it is none of those things.

It's a Mitsubishi 2.3 L turbo-diesel with 86 hp.

but likely this thing.

and judging by this picture it likely is the ranger/b2 version of it and not the mits/dodge version....
