Radiator hoses are NOT good for 200,000 miles.

I guess it's time to do the 60K mile maintenance again. Oh, and I found out the other day that I developed the Ranger Fuel filler leak.....just 2 days before my echeck and inspection...

At least I have tonight off...

I know the feeling. I checked my fanbelts on an old mazda I had then took it on a 50 mile trip. Scattered a belt then the radiator filler neck blew when the gauge went up to 1/2 way. I guess my fan belt checking skills need to be honed...

at least ur fuel filler hose can be found at any junk yard try finding one of the older ones.... or you can go to ford and get the old one for $360 or the new one for $160... ford sure is proud of their shit i'll tell you that.

I just changed my rad hoses a while ago. They were rotten. I was hoping the leak was coming from them, but nope. Still leaks like hell.

No clue where its coming from but I can see it dripping off the rad, no holes in it either.

Right now I'm just topping it off every week with water.. gonna need to fix it before winter though. It would suck buying a new bottle of antifreeze every couple weeks.

Looks like you need to stock up on some Junkyard Antifreeze!

A friend of mine (mweidner) had his radiator leak...found it to be leaking where the aluminum and plastic sections come together. I don't remember exactly what he did to fix it, but I thhink he just crimped the aluminum a little.... Koda, try gettting a pressure tester, then you can hear the leak.

Well, I got ambitious and decided to do the timing belt... I mean if I have to drain the cooling system, well, might as well do this job when it was already drained.

That was a mistake.

I went to get the little bolt on the bottom of the thermostat housing, and well, it turns out that a 6 mm bolt is no match for 200K miles of road salt. Sigh.

I yanked the radiator out to give myself more room. I managed to kinda slide/sit right in there (I'm pretty short). The problem is that it is very recessed, and I can't see what I am doing. I tried hammering a smaller socket on....No go.....I tried cutting it off, but there isn't much room for the dremel, and after all of that my back decided it was done. I am thinking that I will try drilling it out and EZ outing it tomorrow. Biggest problem is that thermostat housing is plastic, one slip of the dremel means that I have to replace that too.

I did notice that I could get the timing belt cover off if I didn't have that damn PS/AC bracket in the way, P/S barely works anyways, and I don't have AC....

On the upside, the crankshaft pully came off no problem for me. One hit with the impact and a few turns with my puller. Nice. That thing is what fought me last time.

I love the Limas, I just hate working on them!

When all of this is done, I still have plugs and that damn filler hose (It's a stepside, and the dealer was closed today, but I have a feeling this is going to be $$$), and I still have my Inspection/echeck.

I stopped and was looking at an 03 today, and I sorta like that new 4 cylinder, 4 plugs and NO timing belt.... It's unfourtunate that it's a mazda engine.

The stuff I buy from the junkyard is actually green. It used to be $1 a gallon but they just recently raised the price to $2. For the price it's definitely worth keeping 5 gallons of it around just incase I get a leak and don't have time to fix it for a while.

Those new 2.3s are GREAT engines. A Ranger I drive at work has one in it, and it has over 220k original miles on it, and still runs like brand new. Very peppy and fun to drive, even with an automatic. Never driven one with a manual, but I would imagine it would be 10x more fun. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

Koda, check your heater hose. Mine was leaking and was running down the hose and dripping near the radiator right after I put my pump in. A month later, and it finally just broke and made me overheat the truck about 10 miles from home.

Holy crap...

Ford raised the price of the plastic Thermostat housing for the 2.5...From $68 to $147!!! I was looking at a co worker's '97 2.3, but it uses a different housing....kinda like the pinto type, or the metal one that they use on the generator engines. Only has the spot for one sensor, I have two.

Guess I'm going Junkyard Diving tomorrow....There is a 98 2.5 that I have been using for parts for the past few year at the local Ford Junkyard.

Got the timing belt and tensioner replaced tonight. It sucks only having a couple of hrs to work on this a night...right before I go to work

Still thinking that a newer 2.3 might be in the somewhat distant future....I want to see how they are with the M5OD, and how much abuse they will tolerate. (this is scaring me....to even be cosidering a mazda engine...after my last experieinces with them....*&#@ing B2200!!)

Anyhow...off to work.
