I have 4.10 axle gearing, what does this mean for me?

I have a 2006 ranger sport with 3.0 v6. It has 4.10 gears on it, is this average for a 3.0 sport? Is my truck geared for highway or towing or average between both?
There is alot I don't understand because I had a 2.3L ranger with I think 3.45 gear ratio but it had much smaller tires so doesn't it all average out then? I guess that is the point.

And my third question how does ford decide what axle ratio goes with what engine or truck??? I mean it was tough enough for me to find a ranger that was the right color, manual and 2wd never mind taking a microscope to things like axle ratio's

The larger the tires the higher the ratio I have 15 inch B II tires on my ranger and came stock with 14 inch. By putting the larger tires on I was having trouble pulling a pass at 55mph. I put A 3.73 fron a 3.45 ratio and walks over the passes at 60 now with a 2.8l carbed. You can gain power by putting smaller tires on or bigger gears for towing but the speedo would need to be recalibrated. What are to trying to accomplish and the guys here will tell you your options.

4.10 is the deepest gearing rangers ever came with from the factory (some say there's a hand full with 4.56 out there but we'll save that for another thread) basically what that means is that your engine is gonna have more mechanical advantage for getting the truck moving, but will be running higher revs out on the highway. i wouldn't think that's a horrible thing for a 3.0, they are supposed to be revvy engines anyways. bigger tires (tires, not wheels) will take away some of that mechanical advantage, thats why guys who run bigger tires often times regear to deeper ratios. smaller tires can stand to have a taller axle ratio. as for ford's reasoning, a lot of it had to do with the engine size and the transmission. smaller engines were more likely to get deeper gears, as were automatic transmissions.

Since I have the "sport" version and have the full size tires does this mean that the 4.10 ratio evens things out? I am just curious about if my 3.0 is geared towards towing or cruising?
Did they make any exact sam ranger's like mine with lower gear ratio's or is the 4.10 standard for my 3.0 sport?

^^
Need to read his post closer.

4.10 is what Ford offered if you wanted to tow stuff. With some tire & wheel combinations, even 4.10 wasn't quite deep enough for the 3.0L. Depending on what size tires you have, there may be some all-around benefit if you were to switch to 4.56 gears (almost guaranteed you won't find these in a junkyard unless you get lucky and find a truck someone else already regeared).

thats what I figured, but as you said what exactly was on my mind is the 4.10 with a 3.0L and 235 70 15 tires really just averages out. So my assumption is although my truck has the 4.10 gear ratio for towing because of the bigger tires it would be considered middle of the pack? :icon_confused:

Here is a tough question for you guys. Out of my last previous ranger and this one which had the mechanica advantage?
(previous truck had the small 14 inch 4 banger wheels with a 3.45 ratio)

just take your ranger that is the right color, 2wd, and 5 speed... and be happy you have 4.10's... if you ever change tire size or start towing more or something, regear as needed lol. I'd just be happy to have stock 4.10's (till I regeared to 4.56's!!)
